Understanding Your Air Conditioning Modes: COOL, HEAT, AUTO, DRY and FAN
Modern air conditioning systems offer much more than a simple on and off button.
Most units include a range of operating modes designed for different conditions, but it is not always obvious what each symbol or setting actually does.
Understanding the difference between COOL, HEAT, AUTO, DRY and FAN can help you use your air conditioning more comfortably and efficiently.
COOL mode
COOL is the mode most people associate with air conditioning.
It is usually shown by a snowflake symbol on the controller.
In COOL mode, the system works to reduce the temperature of the room until it reaches the temperature you have selected.
This is the mode to use during warm weather when your main aim is to cool the space.
When should you use COOL mode?
Use COOL when:
- The room temperature is too high
- You want consistent cooling
- You are using the system during warm or hot weather
- You want the unit to maintain a chosen temperature
For most homes and offices, a temperature somewhere around 21°C to 24°C is usually a sensible starting point.
HEAT mode
HEAT mode is normally shown by a sun symbol.
Many modern air conditioning systems are actually air-to-air heat pumps, which means they can provide efficient heating as well as cooling.
In HEAT mode, the system reverses its operation and supplies warm air to the room.
When should you use HEAT mode?
HEAT can be useful:
- During autumn and winter
- In garden rooms and home offices
- For heating individual rooms
- As an alternative or supplement to other heating systems
- During cooler mornings and evenings
Do not worry if warm air does not start immediately.
Many systems have a short delay while the unit prepares to operate in heating mode.
AUTO mode
AUTO mode allows the system to decide whether heating or cooling is required to maintain your chosen temperature.
This can be convenient in some situations, particularly during spring and autumn when temperatures fluctuate.
However, AUTO mode can sometimes cause confusion.
For example, if the room temperature crosses the selected point, the system may switch between heating and cooling.
For many users, deliberately selecting COOL in summer and HEAT in winter provides more predictable control.
DRY mode
DRY mode is usually represented by a water droplet symbol.
Its main purpose is to reduce humidity rather than dramatically lower the temperature.
The system operates differently from normal cooling and removes moisture from the indoor air.
When is DRY mode useful?
DRY mode can be helpful when:
- The weather feels humid or muggy
- The room feels uncomfortable despite not being extremely hot
- You want to reduce moisture levels without strong cooling
It can be particularly useful during warm, damp weather.
However, it is not intended to replace COOL mode during very hot conditions.
FAN mode
FAN mode circulates air without actively heating or cooling it.
The indoor fan continues to operate, but the system is not normally running the refrigeration cycle.
When might FAN mode be useful?
You might use FAN mode when:
- The room temperature is already comfortable
- You simply want to circulate air
- You want gentle airflow without heating or cooling
It can use less energy than full heating or cooling, but remember that it will not significantly change the room temperature.
What do the fan speed settings mean?
Most systems also allow you to adjust the indoor fan speed.
Typical options include:
- Low
- Medium
- High
- Auto
AUTO fan speed allows the system to adjust airflow according to how much heating or cooling is needed.
Higher fan speeds can help distribute conditioned air more quickly, while lower settings may be preferable in bedrooms or quieter spaces.
What does SWING mode do?
Many controllers also include a SWING function.
This adjusts the direction of the airflow by moving the unit’s louvres.
Using SWING can help distribute air more evenly around the room rather than directing it continuously at one point.
For comfort, avoid having cold or warm air blowing directly onto people for long periods where possible.
Which mode should I use most of the time?
A simple approach works well:
Summer: use COOL
Winter: use HEAT
Humid weather: consider DRY
Comfortable temperature but stagnant air: use FAN
Variable spring/autumn conditions: AUTO may be useful
There is no need to constantly change modes if the room is already comfortable.
Why isn’t my air conditioning changing temperature?
If you have selected the correct mode but the room is not becoming warmer or cooler, check:
- The temperature you have selected
- Whether doors or windows are open
- Whether filters are clean
- Whether airflow feels normal
- Whether the controller is definitely in the intended mode
- Whether an error code or warning light is showing
If the system still does not perform as expected, it may need professional attention.

Modern air conditioning can provide comfortable cooling, efficient heating and useful humidity control — but choosing the right mode matters.
