Air conditioning problems do not arise that often as systems are generally very good at getting on with the job quietly in the background.
That means when something changes, you tend to notice it.
Maybe the room is taking longer to cool. Perhaps the unit has started making a noise you haven’t heard before. You may have spotted water, an unusual smell or a warning light on the controller.
Some air conditioning problems have a relatively simple explanation. Others need proper fault finding by an engineer.
The important thing is not to guess.
Here are some of the most common warning signs we hear about at Oxford Air — what you can safely check yourself, and when it’s time to call for help.
1. Water is leaking from the indoor unit
Air conditioning naturally produces condensation while cooling.
That moisture should be collected and safely removed through the system’s drainage arrangements.
What isn’t normal is water dripping into the room.
Possible causes can include issues with:
- Condensate drainage
- Blockages
- Internal contamination
- Installation or drainage components
- Other system faults
If you notice water dripping from the indoor unit, damp marks on the wall or repeated leaks, switch the system off and seek advice.
Putting a towel underneath it and continuing to run the unit does not address the underlying cause — and could allow water damage to develop.
2. There’s an unusual smell when the system runs
A persistent smell from air conditioning is another sign worth paying attention to.
A musty smell may sometimes be associated with moisture or contamination within the indoor unit.
Filters are a sensible first thing to check, particularly if they haven’t been cleaned for some time.
But if the smell continues after basic filter cleaning, the source may be elsewhere within the system and professional inspection may be required.
Avoid spraying household fragrances, disinfectants or cleaners directly into the unit.
If the smell is strong, electrical or burning in character, switch the system off and seek professional advice.
3. Airflow feels weaker than normal
A noticeable reduction in airflow can make the system feel as though it has lost cooling or heating capacity.
One simple cause can be dirty filters.
If your system has accessible reusable filters, check them in line with the manufacturer’s instructions and clean them if appropriate.
If the filters are clean but airflow remains weak, there may be another reason the system isn’t moving air properly.
Possible issues could relate to contamination, fan operation, system condition or other faults that need inspection.
The key point is that you should not continue lowering the thermostat in an attempt to compensate for poor airflow.
4. The unit has started making a strange noise
You become familiar with the normal sounds your air conditioning makes.
So if it suddenly develops a new:
- Rattle
- Buzz
- Clicking sound
- Grinding noise
- Vibration
- Excessive fan noise
it is worth investigating.
There can be many possible causes, from something relatively minor to a mechanical or electrical issue.
Without inspection, it is not sensible to diagnose the cause based on the noise alone.
If the sound is significant, worsening or clearly abnormal, switch the system off and arrange for it to be checked.
5. The room isn’t cooling properly
Poor cooling is one of the most common reasons customers contact our service desk.
Before calling an engineer, there are a few simple checks you can make.
Make sure:
- The system is actually set to COOL
- The selected temperature is below the current room temperature
- Doors and windows are closed
- The filters are clean
- Airflow is not obstructed
- The outdoor unit is not obviously blocked
If everything appears correct but the system is still struggling to cool the room, there may be a fault or performance issue that requires proper diagnosis.
Setting the controller to 16°C will not normally make a poorly performing system suddenly cool faster.
6. The system isn’t heating properly
Many modern air conditioning systems provide heating as well as cooling.
If HEAT mode doesn’t seem to be working, first check that:
- HEAT mode is selected
- The chosen temperature is above the current room temperature
- The system has been allowed time to respond
Some systems have a normal delay before warm air starts to flow.
Heating operation can also involve periods where the outdoor unit goes through a defrost process, so the system may not deliver warm air continuously in exactly the same way as conventional heating.
However, if the system consistently fails to heat the space or performance has noticeably changed, professional inspection may be needed.
7. The system keeps switching itself off
An air conditioning system may stop or cycle as part of normal temperature control.
But repeated unexplained shutdowns, especially where the room has not reached the selected temperature, can indicate a problem.
Potential causes vary widely, which is why repeated switching off is not something we would recommend trying to diagnose online.
Check that:
- The timer has not been accidentally activated
- The controller settings are correct
- There are no obvious warning lights or error messages
If the system continues to stop unexpectedly, contact the service team.
8. A warning light or error code has appeared
Modern air conditioning systems are designed to provide diagnostic information when they detect certain problems.
That may appear as:
- Flashing lights
- Warning indicators
- Error messages
- A code on the controller
- A code displayed through an app
If you see one, make a note of exactly what is displayed.
Do not repeatedly reset the system in an attempt to clear it without understanding why the code appeared.
The code can be useful information for our service desk and engineer when investigating the problem.
What can you safely check yourself?
Before arranging a call-out, there are some common air conditioning problems you can usually check on without dismantling the system:
- Correct operating mode
- Temperature setting
- Filter condition
- Doors and windows
- Obstructions around indoor or outdoor units
- Timer settings
- Visible warning lights or error codes
Those checks can sometimes resolve a simple operating issue.
They can also provide useful information when you speak to our service team.
When should you stop troubleshooting?
There is a point where DIY checking should stop.
We recommend contacting an air conditioning engineer if:
- Water is leaking indoors
- An unusual smell persists
- A significant new noise develops
- Airflow remains weak after filter cleaning
- The system will not heat or cool properly
- It repeatedly switches itself off
- A warning light or error code keeps appearing
- Electrical or burning smells are present
- The problem keeps returning
Do not dismantle the equipment, access electrical components or attempt to work on the refrigerant circuit yourself.
Why proper fault finding matters
Several different faults can produce similar symptoms.
Poor cooling, for example, does not automatically mean one particular component has failed.
Weak airflow does not always mean the filters are dirty.
A leak does not have one universal cause.
That is why proper diagnosis matters.
An engineer can test the system, identify what is actually causing the problem and recommend the appropriate repair rather than replacing parts based on guesswork.
