Air Conditioning Maintenance Myths: 5 Things Customers Often Get Wrong

Modern air conditioning requires relatively little day-to-day attention, which is one of its advantages.

But that can also lead to a few misconceptions about maintenance.

If the system is still cooling, does it really need servicing? Is cleaning the filter basically the same thing? And surely skipping a service saves money if nothing appears to be wrong?

Not necessarily.

Here are five common air conditioning maintenance myths we regularly come across — and what actually matters.

Myth 1: “I only need a service if something goes wrong”

This is probably the biggest misconception.

A service and a repair serve different purposes.

A repair responds to a problem that has already occurred.

Servicing is planned care intended to help keep the system working properly and identify developing issues.

An air conditioning system can still appear to work while:

  • Airflow is gradually reducing
  • Components are becoming dirty
  • Drainage is beginning to cause problems
  • Performance is deteriorating
  • Parts are showing signs of wear

Regular servicing gives an engineer an opportunity to inspect and maintain the system before a complete failure makes the problem obvious.

That doesn’t mean servicing can guarantee there will never be a breakdown.

It means you’re taking a more proactive approach than simply waiting for one.

Myth 2: “Cleaning the filters is the same as having the system serviced”

Keeping filters clean is one of the most useful basic maintenance tasks many air-conditioning owners can do themselves.

But it isn’t a replacement for professional servicing.

Filters represent just one part of the system.

Depending on the equipment, an engineer may also need to inspect areas including:

  • Indoor and outdoor units
  • Heat exchangers

Myth 4: “Air conditioning only needs attention in summer”

Air conditioning certainly works hard during hot weather — but many modern systems are used throughout the year.

Most contemporary split air-conditioning systems can provide heating as well as cooling, operating as air-to-air heat pumps.

That means a unit that has spent summer cooling a room may be asked to provide heating through autumn and winter.

Maintenance therefore shouldn’t be viewed as a once-a-year response to hot weather.

Autumn can actually be a useful time to check equipment after heavy summer use and make sure heating operation is working before colder conditions arrive.

Commercial systems may run for long periods throughout the year regardless of season.

Myth 5: “Skipping maintenance saves money”

Skipping a service removes one immediate cost.

But that isn’t the same as proving maintenance is unnecessary.

If equipment becomes less reliable or a developing issue turns into a breakdown, costs may include far more than the engineer visit.

For commercial customers in particular, a fault can result in:

  • Emergency call-outs
  • Replacement parts
  • Operational disruption
  • Loss of cooling or heating
  • Refrigeration stock risk
  • Staff or customer discomfort
  • Unplanned downtime

Planned maintenance makes maintenance expenditure more predictable and provides opportunities to deal with issues earlier.

Again, that doesn’t mean every failure can be prevented.

The question for a business is often less:

“What does maintenance cost?”

and more:

“What would an unexpected failure cost us?”

So what maintenance can you do yourself?

There are some useful checks customers can generally make without dismantling equipment.

  • Cleaning accessible filters
  • Keeping airflow around units unobstructed
  • Removing leaves or debris from around outdoor equipment
  • Checking controller settings
  • Paying attention to changes in performance
  • Reporting leaks, smells, unusual noises or error codes early

Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for your equipment.

Electrical work, refrigerant systems, internal dismantling and technical fault diagnosis should be left to suitably qualified professionals.

How often should air conditioning be serviced?

There isn’t one servicing interval that is right for every system.
