What is R22?

R22 Gas is also known as HCFC-22, Chlorodifluoromethane or difluoromonochloromethane. It is a colourless hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC). Hydrochlorofluorocarbons are large groups of compounds that are similar to Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), but with one or more hydrogen atoms.

Why is it used in air conditioning systems?

R22 is a refrigerant gas used in cooling systems like air conditioners. They are the heat carrier that changes from gas to liquid and then back to gas in the refrigeration cycle.

What is R22 use being banned?

Studies have shown that R22 has a detrimental effect on the earth's ozone layer which can result in an increase of damaging UV levels.

When does the plan come in to place?

Due to EC Regulations, from the 1st January 2015, it will become illegal for any company to service and/or maintain their air conditioning system that uses R22 refrigerant gas.

What should I do with my R22 air conditioning system?

It is important to act quickly; if possible, now is the perfect time to replace your old R22 AC system. This allows your company to comply with the law, as well as potentially saving you money in the long run (newer air conditioning systems are more efficient and therefore cheaper to run, as well as being much better for the environment).

Oxford Air Conditioning have worked with a wide range of businesses around Oxfordshire that are replacing their R22 air conditioning systems with cleaner modern versions. To find out more about getting your old system replaced, please get in touch today on 01235 524411 or online.
