Creating a comfortable temperature in your hotel

Contrary to the popular perception of air conditioning, the term does not only refer to the cooling of air. Instead, it relates to creating a temperature that is comfortable and controllable. The properties of air are conditioned as desired, with the altered air creating the perfect atmosphere within an occupied space.

In hotter countries, air conditioning usually consists of cooling the indoor air to a level more comfortable than outside. In colder countries and during the winter months, indoor air is warmed to a level higher than outside.

With regards to commercial properties, nowhere benefits from effective air conditioning more than hotels.

Public areas

If you are looking to install air conditioning in your hotel, the main public areas must be addressed as a priority. This includes the foyer, the bar, and the public bathrooms. When people walk in to your hotel from the street, a comfortable temperature immediately provides a good first impression.

A good first impression sets your guests up for a positive stay, and ensures that your relationship gets off to a good start.

It is important here to address the many nooks and crannies of your hotel public spaces. Especially in older buildings, appreciate that some public areas could be affected by drafts and take action accordingly. This also reflects the importance of effectively insulating your property - Air conditioning can only be effective and efficient if the space is adequately insulated.

Make an assessment of all your windows and access points, and check the roof to ensure it is adequately (and legally) insulated.

Rooms

The highest quality hotels will allow their guests to control the temperature within their own room. This freedom is essential, and will also save time and effort in manning and operating the air conditioning system centrally.

Furthermore, together with being effective, air conditioning in hotel rooms must be efficient, and above all, quiet. If the system is not maintained properly, it can become noisy. If guests have to choose between a quiet night’s sleep or a comfortable temperature, they will not be happy in the morning.

Restaurant

Creating a comfortable atmosphere within a hotel restaurant is essential to keeping your guests happy. In an ideal world, you would like to keep as many guests as possible at your own restaurant. This will increase your revenue and ensure your hotel has a vibrant atmosphere. Positive restaurant reviews can give your hotel the edge over others in the area.

Even if you only serve breakfast and nothing else, good food will get good reviews. In order for your guests to enjoy the food in your hotel restaurant, they must enjoy a comfortable temperature at the same time. Read our article on air conditioning in restaurants here.

Guests & staff

It’s not only guests that need to enjoy a comfortable temperature at your hotel. Staff are required to be attentive and friendly at all times, and in order to do their job effectively, they need to be comfortable. Temperatures that are too hot or too cold can prove to be an irritant to your staff if they must suffer them through their working day. When patience is a key requirement, the right working temperature is absolutely essential.

If your staff enjoy their working atmosphere, your guests will too.
